Choosing Thread Colors for Embroidery Designs
Don't be concerned with finding the exact color that you think
you need for a particular embroidery design. Part of the fun of
embroidery is creating all the different designs in various colors.
There are certainly plenty of colors from which to choose.
Some people even believe that if you change the colors of a design,
it will breach the designer's copyright. There is no color clause
with a particular design. Experiment all you want. Others believe
that their design will not turn out unless they use the same color
depicted on the design they are using. Once again, it is fun and
challenging to create your own version of the design by using
different colors. You may also use the same colors, but in various
shades.
You need to consider the fabric colors when selecting thread colors.
Colors will take on different looks when they are stitched on
various color backgrounds. Your embroidery software may have a
background color change feature. This will assist you in determining
when you need to make a color change so that the design will show up
better. You may also keep different colors of felt or fabric on hand
to test stitch your designs if you do not have this software
feature.
Many designs look beautiful when stitched with the same color, but
with different shades. For example, a pink rose will look beautiful
when stitched with three different shades: dark pink, pink, and
light pink. It will give the rose a beautiful 3-dimensional affect
as well.
Black thread is rather tricky because of its tendency to clump up
and ravel. This is due to the fact that black is a combination of
all colors and it is quite difficult to make the dye. You need to
learn how to handle the problems that may arise with black thread.
It is not impossible to do so, it just may take some time and
patience. You certainly do not want to eliminate black thread from
your thread colors, as it is needed for many different designs.
