Fabric Contents for Embroidery

When working on T shirts, or similar garments, it is best to use 100% cotton or a blend of cotton and polyester. Do not use any fabrics that contain spandex because they will stretch out of shape. This would not only alter your garment, but would alter your embroidery design as well.

With a T shirt or similar item, you should also obtain a tightly woven knit. It is actually not difficult to determine whether the shirt is tightly woven. You merely need to look at the closeness of the weave.

Always pre-wash your garments before taking steps to embroider on them. If the garments shrink, it is best that they do so before you have embroidered them. Obviously, you would not want them to shrink after you have embroidered them, because they may no longer fit you or the person for which the garments were embroidered. Even if the item could still be worn, shrinkage could alter the embroidered design, which could damage its appearance.

You can first experiment with an old T shirt or other garment before using the new one on which you are to embroider. The best fabrics to use for embroidered designs are felt or muslin because nearly any embroidered design will look great on those fabrics. T shirt material will generally work, however, fabrics can be very unpredictable with their give and take, especially when they are moved and stretched in the hoop, as well as with the thousands of stitches that are sewn onto them.
