The different Types of Embroidery Machine
The types of embroidery are determined according to their use of
the underlying fabric or according to the relationship of the stitch
position to the fabric. Commonly used types of embroidery include
free embroidery, counted thread embroidery, and surface embroidery.
The description of free embroidery is the process of applying
designs without considering the weave of the underlying fabric. This
type of embroidery would include crewel and conventional Chinese
embroidery.
Counted thread embroidery involves the creation of patterns by
stitching over a set number of threads in the base fabric. Counted
thread embroidery must have an even-weave foundation fabric; this
could be embroidery canvas, aida cloth or woven cotton and linen
fabrics that are specially woven. Needlepoint and cross-stitch are
good examples of counted thread embroidery. A more specific example
of counted thread embroidery is signified according to whether the
design is being stitched on top of or through the base fabric.
Canvas work embroidery is described as threads that are stitched
through a fabric mesh to form a dense pattern that totally covers
the foundation fabric. Counted thread embroidery would include all
canvas work.
Surface embroidery involves the embroidering of patterns on top of
the foundation fabric by using decorative stitches and laid threads.
Surface embroidery includes most free embroidery and counted thread
embroidery such as cross-stitch.
