The Different Types of Embroidery Threads
You absolutely cannot use regular sewing machine thread in an
embroidery machine because, if you did, it would result in a poor
quality product. The difference between regular sewing machine
thread and embroidery machine thread is the thickness of the thread.
Since the embroidery machine creates numerous stitches very close
together, the machine embroidery thread must be finer than regular
thread. Rayon and polyester are the two fibers that are most used in
embroidery thread.
Rayon thread is derived from wood pulp, or extruded cellulose.
Madeira and Sulky are the most common brands of this type of thread.
An advantage of the rayon thread is that it will give you a high
sheen. The disadvantages of the rayon thread are that there are
limited colors and a lack of elasticity. Due to the movement of the
embroidery machine it is best to use a thread with adequate
elasticity. Also, the dyes used in the rayon are absorbent, which
could create a problem if something that is washed with your item
would happen to run, as the threads could absorb the color.
Polyester thread is a man-made thread. This thread has many
advantages. It has very good elasticity and color fastness which
means that it does not absorb other dyes. There is a large variety
of colors with this type of thread, which means you will have a
better range of colors to add depth, shading and hues to your
designs.
Metallic threads are available in different brands. These threads
are quite striking when stitched into various designs. You will need
to adjust your machine accordingly for these metallic threads. Refer
to your manual for the guidelines which you should follow for the
adjustments in tension and spool placement. Special needles must
also be purchased for use with metallic threads. These needles have
a longer eye so that the wider thread may pass through easier.
These needles are also useful for black thread because they will
help prevent the black thread from fraying. Since black is actually
a mixture of colors, it is difficult to make dye from this color
because it may cause black to clump up and separate when on the
needle.
The variegated threads (those with mixed colors) are available in
the following threads: same color, but with different hues;
different colors mixed together; and alternating colors. These
threads can create some beautiful and stunning embroidery designs.
