Different Embroidery Techniques
There are two primary methods that can be used to embroidery in a
neat and efficient manner. These methods can be determined by
personal preference and by the materials that are utilized for the
embroidery. One method is the hand sewing method and the other is
the stab method.
Hand Sewing Method:
By embroidering with the hand sewing method, bring the needle to the
surface from the underside of the fabric. In order to stitch
properly, you must insert the needle into the fabric and bring it
back to the surface in one movement. Then the thread will be pulled
through properly. This identical technique is used for plain hand
sewing.
It is best to use a thimble for this type of embroidery. Put the
thimble on your middle finger, then when the needle is inserted into
the material, the protected middle finger can be used to push it
through and the thumb and index finger may grab it in the front and
pull at the same time. This action can speed up the embroidery
process and keep you from pricking you finger as well.
You may conduct this method free-hand, or if you prefer, you may use
an embroidery frame. The embroidery frame or hoop can make the work
easier for you, but it must be a frame that can be adjusted as to
the tension of the fabric. The fabric should not be stretched to
strongly to allow for the insertion of the needle without too much
pulling of the fabric.
Stab Method:
The stab method of embroidery is done by inserting the needle into
the fabric at a 90 degree angle and pulling the thread through. Then
insert the needle from underneath the surface of the material, and
pull the thread through. It will not be necessary for most people to
use a thimble when embroidering with this method, however, it may
help to do so if, for some reason, it is difficult to pull the
needle through the material.
A hoop or frame should be used for this method. It is best if the
frame or hoop is mounted so that both of the hands will be free for
embroidering. The dominant hand will be held underneath the fabric
and the non-dominant hand above it. It will not be necessary for the
hands to change position.
